I learned a lot of lessons yesterday... And I'm not even in school. Fancy that.

Rude people make you learn fast. Faster than nice people. They check your reaction time in a split second. Will I slap them or turn on my southern charm?

The degrees on the thermometer really determine that outcome.

It always amazes me how crazy rude some people can be. Heads turning like in the exorcist almost.

But I have a trick.

Turn on the thick southern accent. Tilt your head. Smile real big and repeat something to the extent of "God bless her" and "oh my dear Lord".

Works like a charm.

Maybe I'll make a wreath that's says God bless her on it.

That's southern cursing.

Maybe a good - be nice -  will work just fine. :)

I think I'm in a funk. Don't worry I put deodorant on.

I mean I even forgot about Thrifty Tuesday yesterday...i mean...hello.

But really the whole crafting thing when I wasn't working was going fantastic. All apart of my master plan to become a millionaire, live on an island and make crafts.

Every girls dream.

Now that school is starting to start back up and I've been working a summer job man this choo choo has lost some of it's steam.

I think I just need to learn how to balance my schedule. Which I have never been good at for sure.

It's just frustrating sometimes when you WANT to have time but life insists that you do other things. Don't they know I have things to hot glue? I mean dirty dishes get a clue.

I am living up to my word and not making anything until I really feel I can do a good job. It never turns out well when you force yourself anyway.

Maybe I can spice things up by trying new colors or research new ideas. Heck maybe I'll do a big clearance coupon. Ideas to de-funk? My comments box is open and ready!

I have summer wedding jealousy.

Don't get me wrong. I LOVED LOVED my wedding and wouldn't change a single thing but it was in December.

First off the sun sets earlier (must have missed that in science class) and if you've been to Texas the weather  is comparable to a women who just broke their nail.

It could be 80 degrees or maybe 20... not too sure on any given day.

In defense of winter weddings they are fun because of the whole Christmas / free decorations.  Plus your never hot in your dress and did I mention Christmas - hello gingerbread. 

As I was scrolling though Etsy over the weekend I saw this treasury and it just spoke to that little place in my heart that said "yes please."

Rustic. Cute. Vintage. Carefree. The kind of wedding that my brain doesn't go to but I totally would cut out pictures of and pretend I had time to plan it.

Not that I still buy bridal magazines...ok maybe ... don't judge me.

1. How long have you had your shop? 
5 Months. 

2. What inspired you to make ABirdinthehandart? 
I’ve always loved creating things and I really enjoy sharing them with others. I chose the name “Bird in the Hand” because I love to paint birds. Since I also make jewelry, I decided to create different collections based on different birds. When you buy an item, you get to hold a “bird” in your hand.

3. Who or what inspires you to create? 
I don’t know, something inside. My mom is very artsy; she actually spent some time as a political cartoonist. That probably had a big impact. I also studied biology, specifically birds, for some time in school and I’ve learned to love the beauty and wonder in the world around me.

4. What has been your biggest accomplishment as a shop owner / artist? 
Making a sale. Seriously, since I’m just starting out, every sale I make feels like the biggest accomplishment yet. I’ve done a few shows this year as well, but they haven’t had quite the same impact that the online sales have. I think this is because I used to do craft shows back in high school so I was more used to this type of interaction (although the pieces I made back then were NOT good ☺)

5. What has been the hardest part about starting a business? 
Patience. I want to immediately make everything I have imagined and get it all listed perfectly and then sell out in a week. That will never happen. It takes time to grow and develop. I think I also need to be patient with myself; I’m new to this and I need to give myself time to develop as an artist and a small business owner.

6. What would be your biggest tip to a brand new shop owner / artist on etsy? 
See above. No just kidding. I think it would be to find something that you love making. If you are just starting, you may just be trying to find anything that sells. I guess I would say try to make something you love rather than worrying too much about whether others will love it as well.

Anyways back to the routine I have now christened Thursday to be the day I find my favorite new tutorial to show you.

So here is my new tutorial I found. I'm not a fan of sewing that is for sure but I can stitch by hand.

It looks incredibly detailed and I'm 99% sure I would throw this about an hour into creation BUT if I COULD complete it man it would be neato.

Tree Wall Quilt

You could do so many fun things with this idea like a family tree or even for a wedding. Endless possibilities ... And people that's what I like.

Mostly because if i messed up I would just say - oh no this is just one of the many endless possibilities. There is a cop out for you too my dears.

I'm all moved into my house. Sort of.

All of my stuff is here. BUT it just will not organize itself. How rude.

Plus I have to clean my old apartment. BUT I made an awesome decision. That is called pay someone else to do it.

Livingsocial is my friend. Best friend. I found a deal to get 2 wonderful women to clean my apartment. I feel sorry for them but REALLY happy for me.

I'm torn... thats a lie...not really.

So in all of this busyness (is that how you spell it? I dunno...) I have figured out something.This past week I have had NO time to just surf around etsy and go ohhhh that's cute - BUT I needed favorite shops / items.

Problem solved. Circles.

I must be in circles with people who have wonderful tastes because that is how I find my items / new shops.

It can be overwhelming to just surf around and look. So duh use your friends.

Why I didn't think of this before I dunno. It's like when you ask your friends where to shop in the mall instead of wondering around aimlessly.

So. Tip of the Day. Join lots of circles with people of similar tastes and mooch off each other. Half the time, double the favorites. Amen.

Even with all this heat there is some good news.... I have a house!

Inspiration came from when i was making jewelry for family and friends.they liked my jewelry and suggested that i sell it, so i gave it a go!!

Originally i was inspired by my mother,we used to make jewelry together when i was in my early teens. I was going through some old jewelry that she had made and it inspired me to start up again! And now I get inspiration from everything. I can look at an ordinary object and find some way to bead it or make it into a beaded item!!
4. What has been your biggest accomplishment as a shop owner / artist?
Proving my husband wrong! unfortunately I don't get support from him and he said I wouldn't sell anything, but i proved him wrong and get to say "i told you so"!! that always feel good!! (get it girl!!)
5. What has been the hardest part about starting a business?
The hardest thing about starting a business is getting my name and link out there. Getting noticed is a lot harder than i thought it would be.
6. What would be your biggest tip to a brand new shop owner / artist on etsy?
Biggest tip- NEVER GIVE UP! No matter how slow it gets or down you feel, just hang in there. It may not happen over night, but it will. And remember to promote and leave your link wherever you can!! Also ive found that on etsy ,by joining circles and participating on teams i get a lot more traffic in my shop.

I tried to think of something really witty for a Friday. I failed.

All I can think about is the fact that I feel like I'm on hoarders.

A collection of snow globes isn't creepy. Ridiculous to pack but at least not creepy.

The packing boxes are slowing surrounding me and now I know why those people go crazy.

I did manage to make a custom wreath yesterday somehow. I don't know how considering most of my stuff is packed up. I can remember where the yarn is - but a pair of shoes...not happening.

I know it's sad. I'm a crafter I should be outcasted.

But really for the longest time i was googling DIY like who is this person? How do they make all this stuff??

Point and laugh. It's ok. I would point at myself but then that would just be weird.

SO speaking of DIY I found this really cute tutorial idea that is so simple and easy. Simple and easy are words I LIKE.

Many times when I try tutorials (no offense to those who CAN sew) I usually end of throwing things. Then my husband looks at it for 3 seconds and figures it out. Sigh.

But THIS oh my dears I think anyone can accomplish and is a GREAT gift to anyone really.

I also like that - multiple gift uses. Not re-gifting. Guilty? oh yeah.
